Township Council supports bus rapid transit on 200 street

Township of Langley Council passed a motion to formally support Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) along the 200 Street corridor, connecting the Carvolth Transit Exchange with Willowbrook, and the future Skytrain line.
The Township of Langley has one of the highest growth rates in Metro Vancouver, and public transit investments and infrastructure from TransLink has not kept up with this growth. This has led to inadequate services to support current and future Township of Langley residents and businesses.
Township Council recently green-lit funding of $150,000 and endorsed the Terms of Reference (ToR) for 200 Street 2040 - a vision and guiding document for 200 Street as a frequent transit corridor. The ToR was expanded to consider potential future BRT stations.
Transport 2050: 10-Year Priorities plan approved by the TransLink Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation has identified 200 Street as one of nine new, high priority BRT corridors throughout the Metro Vancouver region.
The Township Council’s motion indicates support for the BRT and directs staff to work with the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation and TransLink to prioritize and implement the BRT on the 200 Street Corridor as quickly as reasonably possible, to potentially commence service before or simultaneously with the start of service of the Surrey Langley SkyTrain.
“The Township of Langley is far overdue for a significant investment in transit infrastructure from TransLink,” says Mayor Eric Woodward. “TransLink has a willing partner and Bus Rapid Transit along 200 Street needs to be at the top of the list once funding for Transport 2050 is confirmed.”
